The Naxos Apothecary Lounge is located at the edge of the harbor of Naxos, opposite the iconic “Portara”. It is a 60 sqm space, formerly used as a restaurant and transformed into a multi-purpose space, offering a hospitality experience that provoke all senses. The creative synthesis of traditional Cycladic architecture with modern materials and forms was a primary design intention and a dynamic field of experimentation for the Trail Practice team.

The space is organized due to two different uses: main pharmacy and the lounge. In the pharmacy area, visitors have the opportunity to test the TNA phytotherapeutic products, smell their unique scents, and feel their texture. In the lounge area, at the restaurant, they can taste a variety of local Naxian products.

The design concept included a physical system for the organization and categorization of the products that would unfold organically within a minimalistic interior, that preserves and showcases the structural toelements of the existing building. In this direction and with respect to the local construction techniques and materials, Trail Practice proposed a restoration that combines the Cycladic white of the walls, the use of local stone, wooden frames, polished cement floors, and exposed concrete ceilings. Within this shell, a metal frame structure unfolds organically, forming a system of shelves that has become a design signature of The Naxos Apothecary. This structure allows light to flow freely through the space while enhancing visual connections to the sea.

Trail Practice aimed to revive memories of traditional pharmacies through modern custom-made furniture and decorative items. Key elements in the organization of the space, include functional show-cases and a multipurpose furniture piece that serves as the main product display surface, positioned in the center of the space. Custom-designed square white glazed tiles, adorned with sculptural details inspired by local island flora, clad the walls, display benches, and freestanding bar. The custom-made amber-colored glass jars as well as the white porcelain ware featuring floral patterns reflect Trail Practice’s dedication to detail.

THE NAXOS APOTHECARY

The Naxos Apothecary, the brainchild of George Korres, is the physical evolution of Greece’s oldest homeopathic pharmacy. With a wealth of experience in producing herbal products, it seeks to share the distinctive qualities of Naxian flora and local traditions with the world. Currently, the brand features three experience stores located in Syntagma, Naxos, and New York, along with shop-in-shops in prominent malls and airports globally. Trail Practice was entrusted with creating a cohesive narrative for The Naxos Apothecary, one that reflects the unique character of the island while unfolding in different spatial scenarios.

The creation of a recognizable brand identity (brand ID) necessitates the synthesis of an architectural vocabulary that is subtly repeated, creating spaces within spaces, worlds within worlds. This challenge requires architecture, interior and industrial design, and graphic design to work simultaneously, bringing different scales into a sympoetic process.
